White Sox, White Sox, Go-Go White Sox!!!

April 5, 2010

The title of this post is taken from the opening lines of the Chicago White Sox fight song Let’s Go, Go-go White Sox. After a long winter break baseball, America’s national pastime, has returned. I am writing this post as I watch the Chicago White Sox take on the Cleveland Indians from U.S. Cellular Field on the south side of Chicago. There is something about opening day and the start of the baseball season that signals the start of the summer and a time when I start to follow sports closely.

There are many things in life that you can not choose, but are glad the choice has been made for you. I was born a White Sox fan. On July 24, 1987, my birthday, the White Sox defeated the New York Yankees by a score of 5-2 at Old Comiskey Park. My grandpa and dad made the decision that I was a White Sox fan because that is the team they followed for years. In the past twenty years there is no sports stadium that I have gone to more than Old and New Comiskey Park and now U.S. Cellular Field and team I have seen play than the Chicago White Sox. While I have not seen many history making games in person I have seen a walk off home run by Carlos Quentin against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Jake Peavy’s first start in a White Sox uniform. I also remember traveling to the south side with my grandpa and dad on a very cold day to wait outside as they sold items from Old Comiskey Park.

After a long off season and spring dealing with a dispute between General Manager Kenny Williams and Manager Ozzie Guillen over Twitter and the roster it is time to put those differences aside, as they have, and start to concentrate on baseball. I will admit that I’d like to still see Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye in White Sox’s uniforms, but I’ve moved on and look forward to what this season has to offer. There are many positive things about this season. I think the designated hitter by committee that Ozzie has instituted will be very versatile, the starting pitching will be a force to be reckoned with in the American League, and the best part the White Sox no longer have to play the Minnesota Twins in the Metrodome, a place they had trouble winning in the past.

I predict that this will be a great season for us White Sox fans. I predict the Sox will win the American League Central division and go far in the playoffs. I will stop short of saying that they will win the World Series again, but if they do that I’ll love it. Finally, I hope that the Chicago Cubs finish last in the National League Central. As the joke goes I have two favorite teams the White Sox and whoever is playing the Cubs.

I have had increase views of my blog in recent weeks. I encourage all of you who visit and read this post to use the comment feature to tell me your favorite baseball team and your favorite baseball experience. I look forward to reading them.

Let’s Go White Sox, and Play Ball!!!
